The punch-hole design and AMOLED display ‘combo’ isn’t exactly
ubiquitous, especially when it comes to Chinese smartphone brands. As of
now the only smartphones to feature an AMOLED display coupled with a
punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera is the Galaxy S10 lineup. But
from the looks of it, Vivo wants in on this exclusive circle as it’s
gearing up to launch a punch-hole-toting AMOLED display that will debut
with the upcoming Vivo S5.
By
a post on Weibo, @DigitalChatStation was the first one to reveal that
Vivo S5 will feature a fingerprint reader built into the screen. In
simpler terms, an in-display fingerprint scanner calls for an AMOLED
display – something that has now been confirmed by the Offical teasers
and also the TENNA listings (more on that in a few).
This fact, coupled with the confirmation that the S5 will feature a
punch-hole housing for the selfie shooter will effectively make it the
first and the only alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S10
lineup, at least until the next iteration of the OnePlus lineup
arrives. OnePlus has announced that it will be launching its OnePlus 8
and OnePlus 8 Pro in 2020 with punch-hole carrying AMOLED displays.
Aside
from these design leaks, the raw specs sheet has found its way to TENNA
listings giving us a peek into what this upcoming sub-premium
smartphone has to offer. As per the listing, the phone will sport a
6.44-inch AMOLED display that produces an FHD+ resolution with a 20:9
aspect ratio.
The new Vivo S5 will be running on a Snapdragon 712
SoC, rounded off by a generous 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage.
The upcoming handset is expected to run on a FunTouchOS-based Android
Pie (9.0).
As
noted by WhatMobile previously, the phone will be debuting with a
rather unique diamond-shaped design for the camera modules. The
four-lens camera setup will arrive with a primary lens that maxes out at
48 megapixels, paired with a 32-megapixel selfie shooter.
The handset will draw power from a 4,010 mAh battery and will also
support fast charging up to 22.5W. The S5 is launching in China first on
the 14th of this month. Though the phone is up for pre-booking in the
mainland, the Expected Vivo Price has not been revealed yet.
